What to Wear for Your Upcoming Family Portrait Photography Session?

You've finally booked the family portrait session you've been wanting! Now the only thing left to do is decide what everyone will wear. Not to worry, we're here to help. What you wear in your family portraits is just as important as everything else because your clothing helps to set the tone and feel of the photos. Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting outfits for your upcoming family portrait photography session in Woodland Hills, LA.

Make Sure Everyone Is Comfortable

If you have young children, chances are they won’t be able to sit still for very long. Choose clothing that is comfortable and won’t restrict their movement. The last thing you don’t want is for your child to be fussing with their clothes during the photo session.

Stick To A Cohesive Color Palette

One of the best ways to make sure everyone's outfits complement each other is to stick to a cohesive color palette. This doesn't mean everyone has to match exactly, but choosing colors that complement each other will help create a more harmonious look. Navy blue, light blue, grey, and white are always good bets. Or if you're looking for something a little more festive, try red, green, and gold. stay away from black, as it can tend to be a little harsh in photos.

Avoid Busy Patterns

Patterns can be distracting in photos and make it difficult to focus on any one person. If you do want to incorporate patterned pieces into your outfit, try to stick to smaller patterns or go with one patterned piece per outfit. For example, pair a solid shirt with a Patterned scarf or belt.

Coordinate, But Don’t Match

You want your clothing to complement each other without being too “matchy-matchy.” Avoid wearing clothes with large logos or busy patterns. Stick to solid colors or small patterns/textures. Use layers to add interest and dimension. cardigans, jackets, scarves, and hats are all great options. Add a pop of color with a scarf or accessory. This will help bring all the outfits together and will make for some beautiful photographs.

Dress For The Season

When deciding what to wear for your family portrait session, be sure to take the season into account. If you're taking photos in the middle of summer, you'll want light, airy fabrics that won't make you sweat buckets when the temperature rises. Conversely, if you're taking photos in the middle of winter, you'll want heavier fabrics that will keep you warm but won't add too much bulk. There's nothing worse than looking back at winter photos and seeing everyone's puffy coats making them look twice their size! wool coats are always a good option because they provide warmth without adding bulk.
